MARCY TECH BARN PROJECT RECIEVES BEST PRACTICE AWARD

Mohawk Valley EDGE and Syracuse-based EDP receive award for their mixed-use Marcy Tech Barn project planning.

Rome, N.Y. –The New York State Upstate Chapter of the American Planning Association (APA) has recognized Mohawk Valley EDGE and Environmental Design and Research (EDR) with a Best Practice award for the Marcy Tech Barn project.

Marcy Tech Barn is slated to be a vibrant, mixed-use live-work environment featuring market rate loft apartments, flexible commercial space, and unique office and R&D opportunities. The site will act as a gateway to the Marcy Nanocenter Campus and SUNY Polytechnic Institute. Just seconds from Wolfspeed’s state-of-the-art 200 mm silicon carbide facility and only 3 miles from downtown Utica, the project is in close proximity to the emerging semiconductor and advanced electronics industry.

EDGE sought public input, provided conceptual masterplans, and fostered outreach initiatives to inform various parties of the project’s progress. Christian Mercurio, VP of Planning & Development and one of EDGE’s project leads, worked closely with members of the EDR team to collaboratively enact milestones.

“The Tech Barn represents a visionary approach to the development process, underpinned by strong guiding principles,” said Mercurio. “The EDR team helped MV EDGE to explore and develop a foundation for future design that responds to the surrounding context and agricultural history, project site constraints, and community concerns.”

Environmental Design and Research is a certified Woman Owned Business (WBE) dedicated to creating and sustaining a better environment for clients, employees, and communities. Founded in 1979, their mission is enacted with integrity, a collaborative approach, a genuine passion for their craft. The New York Upstate Chapter of the American Planning Association’s mission is to serve and support the professional, student, and citizen planning communities in New York State and to improve the quality of life using planning.

Semiconductor manufacturing in CNY: Micron’s brand-new facility plans announced

The morning announcement on Tuesday, October 4th solidifying plans for Micron to build a semiconductor facility in Central New York was triumphant for many.

According to this morning’s briefing and other outlets (including The New York Times and The Washington Post), this project will bring about 50,000 jobs in total– from 9,000 jobs at Micron to the potential of around 40,000 other ancillary jobs from suppliers to contractors.

Mohawk Valley EDGE welcomes Micron’s new state-of-the-art semiconductor campus to the Central New York Region.

“Today’s announcement furthers the continued positive economic transformation and forward momentum happening in Upstate New York,” said EDGE President Steven J. DiMeo. “The adoption of the Chips for America Act through Senator Charles Schumer’s leadership and Governor Hochul’s approval of the New York Green Chips Act has positioned New York as an attractive option for an industry that is looking to add fab capacity and building stronger, more resilient global supply chains.”

We congratulate the efforts of Senator Schumer, Governor Hochul, the Empire State Development team, County Executive Ryan McMahon and his economic development team at the Onondaga County Industrial Development Agency, and our economic development partners at Centerstate CEO.

EDGE- USEPA Brownfields Assessment and Revolving Loan Fund Project

EDGE–USEPA Brownfields Assessment and Revolving Loan Fund Project

In 2022, Mohawk Valley EDGE received a $300,000 grant from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to inventory, assess, investigate, and develop remediation plans for brownfields across Oneida County. As of February 2023, 12 Phase I Environmental Site Assessments (ESA) are completed with this USEPA funding and 1 Phase II is underway. Geographic reach for this project is widespread, from Sherrill to Sylvan Beach to the Village of Oriskany and City of Rome.

For more on reassessing contaminated sites and brownfields in our area, including full details from the Environmental Protection Agency, quick facts on projects, and other updates, see below.

We will update this page with relevant data and project progress on a periodic basis.

Grant Summary for Brownfield Site Assessments, Oneida County

Oneida County has a long history of industrial and commercial uses that left behind a legacy of contamination. The goals of the EPA grant are to prioritize and assess strategic brownfield properties, return tax delinquent brownfield sites to productive use, and facilitate brownfields redevelopment. Overgrown brownfield sites and decaying structures create challenges and opportunities for stabilization and revitalization strategy, turning blight to bright developments.

What is a Brownfield?

It is a property whose expansion, redevelopment, or reuse may be complicated by the presence (or potential presence) of hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminants. Frequently, they are former industrial properties where operations may have resulted in environmental impairment.

Why redevelop Brownfields?

Redevelopment of these sites result in new public spaces, new job opportunities, new urban real estate, and, ultimately, the reversal of decades of environmental injustice. The removal of the blight, alone, is addition by subtraction; but the benefits run much deeper. Adaptive reuse of vacant, contaminated, and underutilized properties requires greater up-front investment, but also carries the most sustainable value proposition for the region – especially since these sites are in our population centers, along our waterfronts, and have proximity to abundant infrastructure and workforce. 20th Anniversary Leading EDGE Awards!

The Leading EDGE Awards were instituted in 1998 to recognize companies in the Mohawk Valley who were leaders in their industrial sector and the regional economy.

In 2021 this week-long celebration will kick off with an Exclusive 20th Anniversary Reception at Turning Stone Casino and Resort on November 15th.

We also continue to remember, honor, and celebrate a founding EDGE Board member; Christopher Destito each year at this event.  He was a community champion who believed in the potential of the entire region.  The Christopher Destito Award was created to honor an individual who possesses the same characteristics as Chris. Since this award was not given out in 2020, we have the honor of being able to recognize two individuals for their contributions to the community.

We are honored to announce that Charles Sprock and Charles Constantino will be awarded the Christopher Destito Leading EDGE Award!
