EPA RLF Remediation: Former Griffiss AFB Parachute Shop, Oneida County, NY
The site is located within the Former Griffiss Air Force Base (AFB) complex and is known as the Parachute Shop, Building 212, at 147 Hangar Road, Rome, Oneida County, NY. The site contains a 13,904 SF single story brick and metal building with a built-up roof. The remainder of the site includes paved walkways and parking lot and vegetated areas. The structure was built in 1958 and operated as a parachute shop from 1958 to 1993. Following its closure around 1993 as part of the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) process, a portion of the building has been allowed to be used sporadically for miscellaneous storage by the City of Rome. Other areas of the building were used for collecting and storing used bicycles scheduled to be repaired, rehabilitated, and redistributed to kids in need. The building is now inaccessible to the public and has been condemned.
Griffiss Local Development Corporation (GLDC) is the current owner of the site having acquired it from the Air Force on January 8, 2004. Remediation being conducted will address the asbestos containing materials in the structurally unsound building by demolition and offsite disposal. Site reuse is anticipated to be private redevelopment as office space.
