Advanced Manufacturing

With its central location, the Mohawk Valley is a natural hub for manufacturing and it has had a home in the region for over two centuries. From the founding of Remington Arms and Revere Copper Products almost two centuries ago to the advanced metallurgy found today at Special Metals Corporation, HMI Metal Powders and others, the Mohawk Valley has been at the forefront of this industry. The Mohawk Valley is also home to over 30 advanced machine shops, which produce precision components that serve a vital role in much larger industrial machines. Manufacturing in this region is not limited to industrial machining and metallurgy, it is also home to others including the oldest manufacturer of residential and commercial furnishings; Harden Furniture and a producer of Major League Baseball bats; Rawlings Sporting Goods.

Some other notable items that are "Made in the Mohawk Valley" include, metal solder, energy efficient furnaces, medical devices, Tiffany lamps, firearms, ammunition, wood pellets, Ortho lawn & garden sprayers and innovative kitchen gadgets.

Aviation & Aerospace

With the legacy of the former Griffiss Air Force Base, and having once served as a regional hub for the former Mohawk, Allegheny, Empire and Piedmont airlines, the Mohawk Valley has deep roots in aviation. In 2006, Mohawk Valley Community College opened an airframe and power plant mechanic training program to train the next generation of aviation personnel. A 2-1/4-mile runway and uncongested airspace make it easy to move aircraft - and the people and products they carry - to and from the Mohawk Valley. Manufacturer Goodrich Power Transmission Systems is the world's leading supplier of high technology drive systems for helicopters, fighter/bomber aircraft and tiltrotor aircraft. Also located at Griffiss is the Eastern Air Defense Sector. Headquartered in Central New York, the Eastern Air Defense Sector plays a pivotal role in monitoring and control¬ling one million square miles of the na¬tion’s busiest air-space east of the Mississippi.

Biosciences

Since the 1980’s the Mohawk Valley has been home to the bioscience field. Biosciences in the region include support for clinical testing, physical and chemical analysis and support in the research and development needs of the pharmaceutical and healthcare industries. The Mohawk Valley is leading the way in cardiac research at the Masonic Medical Research Laboratory. They have played a pivotal role in defining the majority of mechanisms responsible for abnormal rhythms of the heart, commonly termed cardiac arrhythmias, thereby contributing to implementation of the pacemaker, implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD), catheter ablation therapy and a wide variety of drugs used to treat heart disease. They also discovered a new sub-population of heart cells termed, "M" cells that have revolutionized the world of cardiology.

Information Technology & Cybersecurity

Led by the Air Force Research Laboratory Information Directorate in Rome at its $284,358,928 economic impact, the Mohawk Valley has developed a significant niche in the IT industry over the last half century. Today, international firms such as PAR Technology, BAE Systems, and ITT Industries have offices in the region, and homegrown companies such as Black River Systems, and Assured Information Security, are becoming forces in the industry. Fueling the growth of this industry in the region is the expansive IT talent pool generated by our eleven local colleges and universities.

Distribution & Logistics

Because of the Mohawk Valley’s well established transportation network, which supports efficient, cost-effective distribution, the region is a natural center for distribution and logistics. In 2006 Family Dollar opened the second major retail distribution center in the Mohawk Valley, joining Wal-Mart as national chains that have realized the logistical value of the Mohawk Valley. Many smaller firms such as M&L Trucking have likewise recognized the advantages of locating in the Mohawk Valley. The region is within 500 miles of the top 50 U.S. markets, and is a one-day drive from nearly half the population, personal income, business and sales in the United States and Canada.

The Mohawk valley has become a center of major back office operations including insurance claims, check processing and call centers. Bank of America, Bank of New York Mellon, Metropolitan Life, The Hartford, Defense Finance & Accounting Services and ACS all have major centers in the Mohawk Valley, and Utica National Insurance Company’s international headquarters are here.

Electronics & Microelectronics Manufacturing

Over the last decade, New York has made a statewide commitment to nanotechnology, investing hundreds of millions of dollars to develop shovel-ready sites and state-of-the-art facilities. Marcy NanoCenter at SUNYIT, a 300-acre site on the campus of the State University of New York Institute of Technology, is among those being promoted. Other companies like Indium are revolutionizing the nanotechnology industry with new and innovative products.
